Three (French?) Hens

We picked up our little hens yesterday. Three Buff Orpingtons. Petunia, Mildred Pearce, and Georgia Brown. I don't know that there is much to say about chickens but Patrick and I are both very excited and looking foward to lots of fresh eggs in January.

Patrick built this lovely tractor for them (there is now chicken wire over the part on the left).

Thanks! Unfortunately, its loveliness did not overcome design flaws as last night I got home and went out to make sure the chickens had water and found a skunk in the tractor that had eaten two of the three hens. But we've learned the lesson that the opening from the open grazing patch into the coop needs to have a door, and the hens need to be shut up inside every night. So I plan to put on the door, get two more hens, and start again. In the meantime I need to go bury the bodies and play taps on my banjo. Hope this didn't take away all the material for a blog post...
